In the context of World Theatre Day 2021, Caudan Arts Centre has immense pleasure to announce its very first edition of Oye, a youth theatre festival, or as we like to call it, a celebration of youth theatre. Oye is a platform for young people under 25 years to stage theatre performances; a gathering of young participants from schools and institutions from all parts of our island who share a love of theatre, across cultures and languages.
The festival will be held on 26th-27th March 2021. At Caudan Arts Centre, we strongly believe in the next generation of artists. In the youth, we see opportunities to build a creative future. Young talent, both latent and manifest, abounds in Mauritius and through Oye, we want to nurture potential and help it grow. By working within a professional set-up and venue, Oye is an ideal platform for young theatre enthusiasts to interact with peers around various theatrical projects.
Through Oye, we seek to:
- Showcase the best of youth theatre through different styles
- Encourage young talent through opportunities to perform
- Build a strong community of theatre enthusiasts and audience
- Offer a platform for young participants to share and connect on multiple artistic levels
We want to encourage all theatre enthusiasts to be part of this celebration, to generate interest and rekindle the passion for theatre in Mauritius. A youth festival is all about energy and buzz – this is why we are very keen on hosting as many performances as possible, both on stage and off stage, that is, in various other performance areas in Caudan Arts Centre. Oye comprises two categories of performances: main and fringe performances. Main performances will be ticketed events and will take place in the theatre, whereas Fringe performances will be free and take place in different performance areas in the building.
On 26th – 27th March 2021, we would like to turn the whole of Caudan Arts Centre into a performance space, showcasing different styles of theatre.
Participants can choose to enroll in any of the following categories:
- Full-length performances (45-60 mins, ticketed)
- Short performances (up to 30 mins, ticketed)
- Quick performances (monologues, stand-alone pieces, stand-ups up to 10 mins)
- Play readings
- Showcase of Works-in-Progress
- Experimental performances
We wish to emphasise that all languages are welcome and that Oye is open to participants under 25 years.
Directors/teachers/mentors/writers/producers can of course be exceptions to this rule. An institution can have different entries in any of the above-mentioned categories. However, there will be a screening process to determine selected participants. After the selection, there will be mentoring from the team of Caudan Arts Centre.
